About HAW Hamburg
The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Hamburg UAS) is one of the largest applied-sciences universities in Germany. Its nine faculties offer a wide range of bachelor’s and master’s courses in engineering, computer science, life sciences, design and media, and business and social sciences. Teaching focuses on applied sciences, giving students practical insights through projects, lab work, internships and theses carried out in industry. Currently around 15,979 students are enrolled, including 2,200 international students.
Faculty of Life Sciences
Located at the Bergedorf Campus, the faculty has around 1,650 students across five bachelor’s and four master’s programmes, with three areas of focus: Biotechnology and Medical Technology; Environmental Technology and Renewable Energies; and Civil Protection and Urban Resilience — developing strategies and technical solutions to protect society from risks and crises, especially in urban areas.
Hazard Control (B.Sc.)
In the Hazard Control programme, students learn how to identify, assess and effectively counter risks using technical, organisational and strategic means. They develop a broad engineering and interdisciplinary understanding of how to make cities more resilient, prepare companies for crises, and actively shape civil protection and disaster control. Highlights include training in leadership and staff work, an occupational-safety-specialist track, and the opportunity to train as a fire-safety officer.
Research (CONRIS-related)
Planning and evaluation of leadership and staff trainings and exercises for authorities and organisations with public safety and health responsibilities; planning and evaluation of mass-casualty incident exercises; and risk-based planning and design of processes and systems related to civil protection.
