The University of Portsmouth is one of the top ten modern universities in the UK, according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016. We rank in the top 500 universities in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016, which place Portsmouth in the top two per cent of universities worldwide and among the best in Europe. The University also ranks highly in the top 200 most international universities, based on the THE ‘international outlook’ indicator which reflects the proportion of international students and staff, and the degree of research collaboration with international colleagues.
Portsmouth offers a selection of well-established degree programmes in the areas of risk, safety and security studies. Its courses suit all levels of experience, ranging from BSc, through MSc onto doctoral programmes both on campus and via distance learning, with the opportunity to study full-time or on a part-time, flexible basis. Our BSc students can also exit after the first level of study and achieve a nationally recognised Certificate of Higher Education, or exit after the second level and achieve a nationally recognised Diploma of Higher Education.
Our extensive experience and close professional relationships with public and private sector agencies help to ensure that course delivery and development reflect the changing needs of professionals. Our full-time undergraduates benefit from the University’s professional links by hearing guest speakers, listening to leading-edge research and being helped to find professional work placements. Our distinctive approach to supported distance learning, robust procedures for the recognition of prior learning and modular award framework not only help facilitate access to higher education but also offer flexible and transferable platforms for life-long learning.

Possibilities for incoming students
Portsmouth is an attractive, accessible, compact and affordable city. As a city campus, our teaching and most of our residences are in the centre of Portsmouth, so the University and city’s facilities will be right on your doorstep. The University campus is made up of over 40 buildings, interspersed with green spaces and communal areas such as cafés and coffee shops. The city is flat – perfect for cycling – so it is easy to get around.
In Portsmouth there is always plenty to do. One minute you could be standing on the deck of an historic ship, the next you could be walking down a bustling shopping street, browsing in a gallery or sitting on the beach. By night, Portsmouth comes alive with gigs, bars, restaurants, clubs and shows. The main part of the city is built on the natural island of Portsea, while many of our students live in Southsea, a resort area in the south of the island, and contribute to its friendly, cosmopolitan and quirky character. Portsmouth is also in easy reach of London, which is just over 90 minutes away by train, and other places of interest such as the Isle of Wight, Brighton, Winchester and the National Parks of the South Downs and New Forest.
