General information

The new faculty of Health, Security/ Safety and Society was created in 2013 with three study programs: Applied Health Sciences (B.Sc.) and Security & Safety Engineering (B.Sc. and M.Sc.).

In a world which is becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable, academically-trained security experts are more in demand than ever. The bachelor program at Furtwangen University is aimed primarily at providing interdisciplinary education for engineers in the fields of security and safety. In this context, "security" means defense against planned attacks from outside a system and "safety" refers to the protection from natural disasters as well as danger emanating from within a system. As part of their studies, students learn to analyze and evaluate risks as well as deduce precautionary and protective measures, thus limiting the remaining risk and possible negative consequences. There is a wide field of areas in which our graduates are employed. These range from small- and medium-sized enterprises in the private sector to government agencies and research institutes.

Content

With their broad knowledge in areas such as technology, management and psychology, our students learn to evaluate issues relevant to safety and security. The security aspect regards specific attacks including physical perimeter protection, industrial espionage, product piracy, IT-based crime and damage to production plants or industrial processes through intentional interventions. The safety aspect focuses in particular on health and safety at work, ergonomics, fire prevention, hazardous materials, and management of crises and disasters. The program addresses a wide field of areas requiring protection; ranging from small- and medium-sized enterprises up to critical infrastructures. A significant part of the program can be designed to suit individual interests through the choice of a variety of electives.

Study profile

The program focuses on applied sciences in the field of engineering. Beginning with fundamentals in science, the curriculum reflects all relevant subjects of security and safety in enterprises. Special emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills, for example in various laboratory courses and in an obligatory six-month internship in the private or public sector in the field of security or safety. Competence in research is developed by several research assignments and projects which are communicated in the form of presentations and written reports. Each student can determine his or her own area of specialization by selecting from a broad range of electives. The bachelor thesis can be carried out at the university or in collaboration with the private enterprises, government agencies and research institutes.
