VIVES is a Flemish university of applied sciences. Within the CONRIS network it offers the interdisciplinary minor eSociety, available to students from varying backgrounds with no prior technical knowledge required.

Minor eSociety (30 credits)

Our society is evolving towards artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, transhumanism, industry 4.0, quantum computing and blockchain — changing the way we live, work and think. This minor develops a critical awareness of arguments on both sides, considering potential threats to equality and democracy as well as opportunities like e-business, e-health and e-governance. It focuses on the human factor — people and organisations handling systems — examining how to maintain a healthy balance, hold sensible online relationships, enforce digital citizenship and stay resilient in cyberspace, alongside the legal and ethical frameworks involved. The programme comprises: The Information Age (9), An Evolutionary Journey (6), Internet of Everything (3), The Human Factor (6), Legal & Ethical Framework (3) and an Integrated Interdisciplinary Project (12 credits).

Educational approach

Interactive lectures, guest speakers, field trips, group work, individual assignments and an international experience expose students to different visions and perspectives. By the end of the semester, students can give technology-neutral advice about phenomena like digistress, the digital gap, data protection, cyberbullying, tech addiction and digital footprint.
